It is politically and socially (but, obviously, not chemically or pharmacologically) "LSD Lite".

P.J. O'Rourke made much the same observation in 1985 in his essay about Ecstasy, "Tune In, Turn On, Go To the Office Late On Monday," originally published in Rolling Stone. "Man, I come from the days when drugs were drugs," he writes. "One toke would turn your parents into long haired raving demons at the dinner table."

Very funny essay, and fairly free of his usual libertarian politics.
