I'd love to know what database/MySQL topics have been done in the past (and how they were received). I'm checking out the LISA site, and I'll see what I can find from there.

They have a lot of papers that use mysql or various databases but none specifically about MySQL. I think they'd be open to it. "new" is cool.

I'd like to do this but I'm not sure what an appropriate topic might be...when's a good time to call you with ideas so we can talk? (or online chat)

I don't have a cool new tool to make system or network administration easier. Much of the past couple of years I've been taking other people's software and customizing it for our wonky local environment, fixing bugs, adding features and writing documentation. Are improvements to OSS that could be but isn't widely used worthy of a paper?

I'm currently in the middle of handing over responsibility for what used to be a pretty large chunk of my job to intermediate level staff so I can concentrate more on networks and less on system software. Does anybody want to hear about gracefully changing responsibilities (or leaving a job, something I've always found difficult because I don't want to stop helping my clients)?

While I have deep knowledge in some areas and good breadth overall including fair chops in the local office politics, I don't consider myself a guru in any field (local sysadmins may have different opinions). I've given hour-long talks but never a half-day or full day one. I vastly prefer writing to speaking in front of a large crowd.

With that vague and dispirited rambling as a starting point, I would be thrilled if anyone can find a way for me to contribute meaningfully to LISA 06. Other than mentioning that Cory Doctorow is an amazing speaker and the program committee would be hard pressed to find someone who can give a better talk on the freedom of information and digital rights management.

Improvements to OSS projects that are paper-worthy when they add a novel feature that hasn't been added anywhere before (that's the theory... I've seen plenty of papers that made me scream, "but VMS did that decades ago!" (or BSD, or other systems)

I always enjoy the "travelogue papers" which tell about a big project that happened and the novel things that made it a success. They usually have some kind of drama or failure that was overcome... that makes it an interesting story.

Email me if you want to talk on the phone about ideas, or contact the email address in that URL (since I'm not on the committee this year). The URL also has info about who to contact about Invited Talks ideas.

I never have decent paper ideas. Just boring, I guess.

I was thinking of doing a paper based on my thesis. For my thesis I hope to apply a measurement technique (in this case Object Measurement developed by Stan Siegel & Scott Donaldson) to systems administration. Your thoughts & advice would be most welcome.

That sounds like an interesting paper! I'd love to see a draft or outline!
