Tivo and Apple

Tivo’s stock is going up on rumors that Apple is about to purchase them.

I doubt it so much that I propose this is how the rumor got started. Today is Steve Job’s birthday. He turned 50. I believe that what actually happened is that be bid on the Tivo that I’m selling on eBay.

Rumors get started that way. Really!

Heh, I'm actually 100% sure that some institional investor saw a chance to finally get out of TIVO at over $2 by leaking this "scoop" to some pliant websites. TIVO closed at $4.48 today, so mission accomplished: whatever fund manager dumps the most shares tomorrow morning is probably the culprit.

It's sad, since I love my TiVo to death, but I can't see any good reason right now for anyone to buy the company: all you'd get is an unprofitable product line, a shrinking customer base, some of the biggest monopolists in the world as your competitor, and the instant ire of the MPAA and broadcast networks.

I just pray they open up the guide data format before they tank.

So, Steve Jobs is among the 17,579,418 people (estimated earth population/365.25) sharing my birthday, two of whom I've ever met. (I'm a few years younger). Well, whaddaya know about that?

The odds that any two people in a given room share a birthday is rather greater than the odds that anyone in the same room shares _your_ birthday, n'est-ce pas?

I met someone that was born on my birthday in the same hospital. She dug up the newspaper clipping of her birth announcement and there I was listed right below.

And we were going to college together for about a year before either of us realized it!

I still see her now and then.
