Google Analytics
Mar. 18th, 2007 10:09 amI sort of ignored this when it was released because of other matters. Now I’ve tried it and I’m very impressed. You add a little code to the bottom of your web pages and each time a person visits the page a little message is sent to Google, who builds up amazing statistics for your use. I now know how many people from which countries are going to my web sites, which web pages are generating revenue and which aren’t, and other things. If you don’t have adverts (which I don’t) its still useful.
My favorite part is that it connects the hits from a particular user and connects them to see what “path” they follow on the web site. I see where most people seem to “enter” the site, but most importantly where people exit the site. Most people go to the main page then never go anywhere else. That means they’re getting what they want, or disliking the site completely. Of those that do click around, they usually click on “chapter by chapter notes” and then don’t go anywhere after that... which means that the UI is so confusing that people just say “fuck it” and go off to some other web site.
