After years of hearing customers say things like, “You fuck-heads! I wish you’d go out of business”, CompUSA is closing more than 50 percent of their stores. Sadly, it isn’t 100 percent, which would be a great help to computer users everywhere. Alas, their web site hasn’t captured this part of their history.

My question is, where do we have left to go to buy that one or two pieces of stuff you might need, when you need it? Circuit City/Best Buy aren't useful for computer parts, Staples/OfficeMax also suck. I"m too far away to go to Green Brook Electronics which was my go-to place before. Radio Shack's overpriced.

Yes, that is sadly true.

Hopefully a replacement will pop up.

(I didn't *totally* hate CompUSA... but I only bought parts and cables there, and I was "my own salesperson" so I was generally happy. However there were many times that I would walk by people that were being told misinformation about the computer they were about to purchase. Veeery frustrating.)

Oh, God, I'd never buy a computer there, nor would I suggest someone did without me to be there to do a tactical strike--get in, get the computer, get the hell out!

I use Newegg all the time, but it takes a day or two. If I need something quick, it's not good.

So, lack of competition for the other guys (although it was crappy) is a good thing?

The barely adequate is the enemy of the good. By proliferating a crappy chain all over the place, they ate enough of the market that better stores couldn't operate.

Now, areas which can't support someplace better will lose, in that they devolve to no stores at all. But areas with a market large enough to support a good store but not large enough to support a good store and one or more crappy compusa's may win.

Oh noes!@ What'll happen if CompUSED does go out of business? Then I'll only have Best Borrow to buy and return things to!

At least it's better than Fry's. (It's a California chain so bad, they rebox and restock broken returns. No, really.)

No longer only in California, sadly.

Fry's kicks compusa's butt four ways to Sunday. Yes, they are slimy and inept and they cavity search you, and they even stopped doing the awesome decor jobs, but they are cheaper, open much longer, and stock at least four times as much stuff (or at least did when I was last in one, which is something like seven years now, and given their square footage advantage I suspect that that hasn't changed a lot).

Oh, I appreciate Fry's for what it is. I'll stop at the one in Sunnyvale and wander the aisles for hours for fun. And it's the place to go if you need something that (a) can't be found anywhere else, (b) you need RIGHT NOW, and (c) there's no chance you'll need to return. But otherwise...

This might be good for the public (maybe), but for parts locally (as opposed to TigerDirect or CyberGuys or eCost), I'll miss 'em. I'm not "the public".
