When I read headlines like ”Illegal Video Downloads Surpass Legal Alternatives 5 to 1” it makes me think... wouldn’t it be great if some UI researcher did a usability study on illegal and legal download sites and embarrassed the legal sites by showing that they weren’t as usable.

I don’t know if the study would produce such results, but it gave me a chuckle.

Well, another obvious factor could just be title availability. The legal movie download industry is pretty immature, so selection is limited.

The article on the report also mentioned "adult oriented", but I wasn't 100% sure if that was a clear euphemism for porn, or if it meant boring grown up movies like Ordinary People.

If they're talking about porn, then it's pretty obvious why the piracy ratio is so high.

C'T, a German IT magazine, did several editorials and tests about this. If I remember correctly they did a comparative test for HD video and could not get the HDMI to work and in the end resorted to getting the video from the P2P networks. Their results: easier, faster, better compatibility, less risks of viruses and worms.

I would agree with this. Bitorrent is *so* easy to use compared to the so called legal sites. The selection is better too.:)
