Today's Project: Getting organized

Step 1: Bought 4-drawer filing cabinet at Office Max along with 200 file folders and 50 hanging folders
Step 2: Install in my bedroom/office
Step 3: Create file folders for:

• Investment papers
• Divorce
• [address deleted] Mortgage
• Bills -2002
• Bills 2003 Jan - June
• Bills 2003 July- December
• Bills 2004 Jan - June
• Bills 2004 July- December
• Bills 2005 Jan - June
• Bills 2005 July- December

Step 4: Fold laundry that is now 4 days old and wrinlcled
Step 5: Put on new laundry.
Step 6: Move Quicken files to my new Mac.
Step 7: Start going through my dozen stacks of papers, paying the bills, filing or tossing the rest.

One of the best purchases I ever made was a file cabinet... and now I'm on my 4th, and contemplating a 5th. The 4-drawer cabinet is at my office (and getting full), the 3 2-drawer cabinets are here at home.

I ended up not getting a filing cabinet (too much of a pain to move when you seem to be moving at least once a year), but ended up with the plastic bankers-box sized file boxes, which have been working really nicely. I'm reminded that I'm a computer geek by the fact that I tend to think in terms of online storage (the file drawer in my desk), near line storage (the most accessible box), and offline storage (where the hell did I put that box, and how many boxes are already on top of it!).

one of the best things i did for organizing myself (since it became kind of required when my finances got more complicated) was to buy a box of 100 big envelopes, the kind that are big enough to hold 8 1/2 x 11 pages.

i just fill them up with papers and label on the front (like "personal, 4/03 - 5/03 including refinance info" or something). then i can put them in larger file folders or other large-scale sorting.
