I've heard it described that they were looking for "friendly" and "more accessible".

Ummmmmmmmmmm, yea, right!

They seem to be marketing towards a pre-school demographic now...

At least it's not the coffee ring.

It's a coffee ring. Some idjit put it on the contract paper, said "Yes, we'll take that!" and billed them a couple mil for creative work.

A phone company is not Zen. The US marketplace doesn't know a zen japanese art circle from a hole in the head of a madison avenue exec.

Really? You were there for the meeting?

Just because Scott Adams is entertainingly snarky doesn't mean that he's not occasionally also wrong.

A phone company is not Zen.

Er, so what? Toyota isn't a 60s rock band; this has no bearing on whether they're using the Beatles in their ads.

The US marketplace doesn't know a zen japanese art circle from a hole in the head of a madison avenue exec.

The Lucent logo was, in fact, done by a San Francisco design company. In fact, there was a small kerfluffle when it debuted, when some members of the San Francisco Zen Center basically accused Lucent of ripping off their logo.

I do like how SBC is renaming all of its various shitty services (SBC, SNET, Cingular, etc) "at&t". It's rare that awful companies are willing to give consumers fair warning like that.

Wow. They made one of the ugliest logos ever even uglier.

I'm impressed.

They probably paid some big design firm hundreds of thousands of dollars to design it, too.

clearly SBC is capitalizing on all those synergies to their fullest extent.

gah! the more I look at it, the more I realize that they managed to take a respectable logo and remove from it all staying power.

It really is a beach ball and a kid's typewriter.

So, the Death Star is now hollow, representing the "hollowing-out" of legacy telephone networks. Very clever.

Yes, it slowly fades toward nothing as your eyes move from left to right.
