Yup, my 1 week of paid employment (the rest was volunteer) on the Howard Dean campaign means I paid taxes in Vermont this year. Their withholding was off by just $10. I was glad to pay it. My tax guy said that if I didn’t pay it there was a good chance that nobody would ever contact me, but that if I ever moved to Vermont they would nag me then. I’d rather be safe than sorry.
When I saw the Vermont state tax form at my tax guy’s office my eyes were immediately drawn to the checkboxes that usually say “Single”, “Head of Household”, “Married Filing Jointly”, and so on. For every “Married” option, they also have an equivalent for Civil Union. My eyes got all watery. I know it’s pretty geeky, but it was just such a tangible recognition of the validity of same-sex relationships. I mean, the only guaranteed things are death and taxes, right?
Holy crap!

Personally, I'm all for bigger taxes, but only when we actually get services from them, not threats that services will go away shortly after taxes are cut.
