I forgot the trailing “.” on a label in a DNS table today for the first time in, I think, 5 years.

I always drop the training "." at least once when manually updating DNS tables. Even forgot it in the RHCE exam and had to go back to fix it. It's just counterintuitive.

The implict even-more-shameful confession here is that you're still using BIND. :)

Next thing you'll tell us is to stop using sendmail!

What do you recommend instead?

I use djbdns and love it to pieces; YMMV.

(Yes, DJB is a jackass. The trick to using his software is to interact with the man himself as little as possible.)

djb isn't a jackass.

remember, jesus was also crucified and today millions worship him.

djb's attitude is unpopular because it comes out and says "your code is shit" to many old-timers in the Internet space who people worship for no good reason other than "once upon a time, they were the first to write some software that implemented something novel, at the time." djb's clearly saying "today, it's no longer sufficient to implement functionality. security is necessary."

time will prove djb right.

I'm pretty comfortable at the "he's an asshole" stage. When I move on, I'll buy you a beer.

I do believe he is brilliant, however. That's orthogonal to one's asshole status.

Funny, I had the exact same thought...

You edit by hand? You've not automated it??

If nothing you do is routine, then automation is usually way overkill.

Nevertheless, the geek attribute known as "Laziness" will guide geeks to automate it anyway.

I have written the ultimate DNS management system. Sadly I haven't deployed it at this new site yet. It's definitely in my top priorities.

(so is writing a LISA paper about it)

Submit! Submit!

(And I'm not even on the PC this year.)

I guess that for me, it's a function of how much I need to remember. An act of encapsulation more than anything else.

*token non-computer geek reply*

It scares me and intrigues me that there were 15 replies to this entry at the time of my reply.
