I'm thinking about getting a macintosh laptop. I'm a Unix freak, and I've never had a Mac before, so I'd have to get over all my issues with a 1-button mouse, etc. (yeah, you can buy 3-button mouses but that doesn't make my laptop's surface mouse suddently split into 3).

Today I read on www.apple.com about iCal. It sounds like my dream calendar. Network-centric, multiple views, etc. etc. All the things I've always wanted.

Then I realized that the real power of iCal would be if all my lovers used it too.

Dang. I can't afford to buy a new mac for everyone I sleep with.

my brother...

My lover just bought me an ibook! Wow!
Right now, we use a web-calendar (myself and my three primaries) because JB doesn't have a mac yet.
It is a wonderful aid for our scheduling and such ... haven't tried ical but I'm hoping to do so soon!

Maybe he can qualify for the Educational Discount--I'm sure he's taught many a lover a thing or two!

I don't know much about iCal because I use Oracle CorporateTime at the office, but I sure wish full calendaring interoperability would hurry up and get here.

I'd really like to be able to share calendars with people I don't work with!

I second that...although it would require somehow getting a Mac into my house. I don't object to that on principle, if I bought a laptop, I'd seriously consider a Mac. Course it's not like I'm buying a new computer again...

a rose is a rose is a rose - is it?

is the mac's iCal based on the iCal standard?

if so, shouldn't there be something out there that y'all could use?

Yes, it is. There are about 3 other things out there that support it, at least for cheap.

Mozilla and a WebDAV enabled http server...but the mozilla calendar interface is enh.

(Actually, that's all I've found so far.)

Yes, I'm glad to see them using an IETF standard for calendaring. However, it's not the protocol, it's what you do with it.

To make an analogy... Lots of products support IMAP4 for email, but only some have an off-line reader mode (and only some of _them_ do it really well).

What Apple seems to have done on their server is exceptionally cooler than everyone else.

(Oh, and I use opera, and they don't have a calendaring module yet...so I'd be using opera for web and mozilla for calendar...)
