Focus on the Family founder James Dobson is warning that SpongeBob SquarePants
causes homosexuality. I would normally ignore this kind of thing until a friend
emailed me this:
“My 12-year-old cousin loves Spongebob Squarepants. Y’all know about the ”gay warning” Dobson and others have issued, right? Well, my cousin has already been teased because he plays the piano and is sensitive. Friday, kids at his private Christian school were calling him gay again, and telling him he must love Spongebob because he’s gay! My cousin tried to take his Spongebob stickers off his notebook!
... It’s so scary and so appalling to me that these so-called family values advocates, these people who supposedly want to protect children, do this to real children in real life. And either they don’t know about the consequences of their words, or worse yet, they know *exactly* what their hateful and mean-spirited and attention-getting words will do to real children and talk anyway, with no regard for the consequences. It’s a bit frightening to me to think that they might.
So I decided to research this a little bit more. It turns out that the
real issue is that Nile Rodgers and his We Are Family Foundation (WAFF)
are distributing a video called “We Are Family” to all elementary schools in the US that
includes more than 100 beloved children’s characters united to bring a message
of diversity and togetherness under the banner of
“We are family”. SpongeBob appears in the video.
This is worthy of protest?
Dobson’s upset that someone is spreading love, togetherness
and the value of diversity? Oh, and that Spongebob often holds hands with his
best friend Patrick. Sheesh.
And then I think of that poor 12-year-old sitting in school getting picked
on, just like I was picked on when I was young, and maybe you were too.
My moral values say: treat everyone fairly, with respect, and
with equality for all. What part of “and liberty and justice for all” don’t
they understand?
Please donate to the We Are Family Foundation. As membership chair
for NJLGC I should be asking you to join NJLGC but
instead I’m asking you to make a donation to the We Are Family Foundation.
I just donated $10.12 (the 12 cents is in honor of the 12-year-old boy getting
harassed because of Domson’s ugly message). You can donate as little as a few dollars, just don’t forget the 12 cents! NJLGC will send a letter to WAFF explaining the 12 cents.
It just takes a few minutes:
-
Donate to WAFF -- It took me about 2 minutes. (don’t forget the 12 cents!)
- Write to the NJ Dept. of Education -- Can’t think of anything to say? Cut-and-paste this:
I’m writing to you to encourage you to support WAFF’s “We Are Family” children’s video. Dobson says SpongeBob is bad. I say supporting diversity and teaching children to get along is more important. New Jersey is a state that doesn’t hate! Let’s keep it that way!
- Send a letter to NJ’s acting Governor Codey telling him to ignore Dobson and support diversity.
Thank you,
Tom Limoncelli
