The Swiftboat Vets are a 527 organization which means it is illegal for them to coordinate their campaign with Bush-Cheney’04. Last week we learned that one of the vets is an advisor to the Bush campaign. Today we learn that the Bush-Cheney’04 lawyer reviewed their plans and gave feedback. It’s obvious that Bush is doing this because he knows he won’t win and is getting desperate.

So what are the activism plans for next week? Is there a pre-meeting to make signs and such? ("Bush -- Redeeming the Name and Reputation of Benedict Arnold", perhaps?)

Judging from this and other public comments he's made, I think it may all be ultimately a plan to get 527 organizations outlawed. I think this because orgs like MoveOn are being incredibly effective and are what wealthy liberals are using to counteract the investment in organizations and media that the right have been so successful at for the last 30 years. Now that the Republicans are being beat at their own game, they're getting nervous.

So you create a 527, affiliate it inappropriately, and then say, "See! 527 organizations are fundamentally unviable!" It's almost as crazy as anyone supporting Bush-Cheney actually getting people to question John Kerry's military record.

Hmm... I would've phrased it that they've realized they'll only win by hook or crook. Perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic, but I fully expect the republicans to succeed in 'winning' the election any way they possibly can. The only real hope is a) for the democrats to have actually won it documentably and fairly, and b) for there to be hordes of reputable people with media creditability standing by to call the republicans on whatever they've pulled. I'd say you're one of b), but your above phrasing has me wondering if you're slipping...

I saw a bumper sticker the other day, "It's not over until your brother has counted the votes."
