I took a break from my 3 months of training to return to New Jersey for the weekend. It was good to see C again after all these weeks. We went out for ribs on Friday night.

Saturday we went into NYC:

  • Saw CSA: The Confederate States of America, a film written and directed by Kevin Willmott. It's a "Spike Lee presentation" (though I don't see him listed as a producer) and IFC just picked it up for a distribution deal. It was good but a bit disappointing. It could have been a lot more edgey. I recommend people see it, but have low expectations. We saw it at IFCCenter which used to be The Waverly (I think). The new theather has the most incrediblely comfortable seats.
  • While walking around Washington Square Park, we watched two street performers:
    • JoeyJoey perform stunts, swallow swords, tell jokes. He's travelled around the world and
    • Tic and Tac perform acrobatics, tell jokes, and dance
  • Dinner at Figero
I've seen Tic and Tac before. In fact, they seem to be franchising similar hip-hop dance/acrobatic groups on street corners all over NYC for quite a few years. However, this is the first time I've seen that they have a web site. I hadn't realized they've been in music videos by Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and others. Their web site has more info.

I guess all street performers have web sites now. What a weird world we live in.

Sunday we hung out while C prepared for work next week.

[livejournal.com profile] twistedchick continues to give great newssnippets. This one sticks out in my mind:
Bush's domestic policy advisor, Claude Allen, resigned Feb. 9 "to spend more time with his family." Now the truth comes out: he was arrested for fraudulently getting refunds from Target and Hecht's for things he didn't buy, just took off the shelf and pretended to buy. It wasn't a mistake, unless someone makes that kind of mistake 25 times. Quite a takedown for a 'family-values' man, getting taken down for ripping off department stores for things that cost as little as $2.50. Yes, that's not enough to pay for a movie ticket. More on Allen here. And Bush is shocked -- shocked, I tell you -- to learn that theivery is going on around here.
Remember how Reagan had more arrests in his administration than any other, and Bush, Jr. seems to have tons of problems in that area?

When it happens and I say, "I told you so" and everyone replies, "no you didn't", I will refer this post and others to prove my point, no matter how "too late" it is.

Father, son die in manure pond
'If you step in, it sucks you in,' sheriff says

GRANGEVILLE, Calif. - A dairy worker and his 8-year-old son died in a manure pit on the farm where they lived, authorities said Tuesday. Luis Gutierrez, 27, and Luis Armando Gutierrez went to feed calves Saturday night and apparently stumbled upon the manure pit in the dark, investigators said.

[Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] jwz on this post.]

My political comment: Farm workers should be protected by OSHA, but they aren't. I hate to be un-funny about this, but two people DIED. The "culture of life" people would go ape-shit (pardon the pun) if someone proposed requiring safety rails and such to save lives because it would actually cost money. The truth is that all workers deserve to have safe environments with reasonable protections from dangerous machines, processes, and toxic chemicals.

(Someone pointed out that if you do the math, the wife had to have been pregnant at 12 or 13.)

Pink is the new Punk

The anti-pop star is as outspoken as ever and she's setting her sights on the ridiculous antics of Hollywood females. This is the first single off Pink's forthcoming album I'm Not Dead.
