Here’s an idea for a product that Google could make. Since they seem to have a copy of every file in the world, they could make a WinZip clone that has a new compression scheme whereby if the file is already indexed by Google, they replace the entire file with the URL to the file. Huge ZIP files of porn would compress to nearly nothing. They just need a mechanism for the compressor to say, “Hey, don’t delete this file... EVER”. Sure, stuff you’ve written personally won’t compress as well, but right now I’m backing up my Mac and I see that most of the stuff I have is also available elsewhere.

They could also make a backup scheme based on this.

[ Note: A "bumpersticker" slogan refers to an organization's extremely brief description of what they stand for. It should be just a few words long, and structured so that if anyone is against it they look bad. For example, the Republicans have gotten a lot of mileage out of the bumpersticker “Less taxes / keep more of your paycheck”. Howard Dean, the new chair of the DNC, has stated that Democrats need to have one. ]

Proposal for the DNC bumpersticker: Opportunity For Everyone

To me, this expresses everything that’s good about being a Democrat. We believe there is nothing more important than helping people get a better lot in life. We know that fundamentally people will work to improve their lives and the only thing that holds them back is the roadblocks that are put in their way.

We don’t believe in a handout, but a hand-up. We’re in favor of anti-discrimination laws because they remove roadblocks to opportunity. We hate to see people go hungry, homeless, or without medical attention because that takes them out of the opportunity path. We want poison-free neighborhoods because without health, they have no opportunity. And of course, we want all Americans to get a quality education, because it is the single most important key to assuring opportunity.

To quote Billy Joel, I believe in a country where every child has a pretty good shot to get at least as far as their old man got.

I’m waiting for a Democratic candidate to stand up and make the following point in one of their speeches:

“Would you like to predict how I’m going to vote on an issue once I’m elected? It’s pretty simple. I believe in Opportunity for Everyone. It’s that simple. If the bill creates opportunity for people, then I’m for it. If it clears the roadblocks that prevent people from moving up their lot in life, I’m for it. But if it restricts people’s ability to do so, you can count on a “no” vote from me.”
There are second-tier issues that come to mind when talking about “opportunity for everyone”. For example, why does the government build highways? Because commerce depends on it and without commerce there is little opportunity.

Etc.

Etc.

I need to work on this more, but I think this is the right direction for finding our bumpersticker. In fact, I think we can even tie this into why having an ethical government is important.

Thoughts? Opinions?

C and I went to see “The Gates” in Central Park on Monday. C has the week off, I had the day off for President’s day. It was *beautiful*. Stunning. The contrast was amazing. NY is completely monochromatic in the winter. Imagine the beautiful contrast if you took a black and white photo and streaked bright lipstick through it. Now do that at the grand scale the size of Central Park in New York City. It snowed the night before so it was a different experience than people described last week. It was also pretty packed with people. I guess a lot of people had President’s day off.

It’s there for a few more days. If you are local, I highly recommend you go to see it. We spent an hour there wandering around. If you are local you can do it easily by taking a half day off from work. And soon it will be gone as quickly as it came.

Sideways: Wow, what a great flick. And to think that I was going to see it when it was an unknown independent flick only being played at art-houses. We went to see it this weekend at the huge Loews theater near us.

It was, amazingly enough, the first time I’ve been in a movie theater when a cell phone went off during the film. Of course, it was during one of the most dramatic and critical scenes (when Maya is describing why she loves wine) and totally ruined it. Ugh.

Anyway, I really hope this film wins an Oscar or two. It deserves it.

1. Quit my job to join a presidential campaign

2. Had a book listed on the Amazon top 10 for a day, top 100 for a week.

3. Eloped then had a public wedding more than a year later without telling anyone we were already married.

4. Shook hands with 3 sequential governors of New Jersey (one who I was on a first-name basis with)

5. Dressed as a priest for a theatrical portion of a protest, gave a eulogy.

6. Helped plan and participated in a protest to encourage our University to increase tuition.

7. Single-handedly planned a conference, which was a failure, with only about 7 people showing up.

Sheesh this is difficult. The meme is really for 10?

Ack! I've had my Tivo series 2 for months and I'm just getting around to selling off my Series 1.

My first time selling something on eBay. I can't believe it took me an hour to enter all this information.

Any suggestions about my advert? Tell me soon. I can only make changes up to when the first bid!
