“At a point in every person’s life, one has to look deeply into the mirror of one’s soul and decide one’s unique truth in the world, not as we may want to see it or hope to see it, but as it is.”
Gov. James E. McGreevey, August 12, 2004

The governor’s story is the story of the struggle of every gay American who has had to live a life of denial, in the shadows. His grace and dignity when faced with the difficult decision he faced today, was awe-inspiring. Let this be the last generation in which anyone has to make that decision.

Please, join us in reaching out to the governor to express our support and let him know how much his honesty means to us. We need to counteract the feeding-frenzy that has already started in the media.

Email him RIGHT NOW by clicking on this link:

Are you serious about this? McGreevey resigned to try to head off massive scandal because he'd appointed an unqualified lover to a cushy job on the public payroll. (And from what I understand, it wasn't the first scandal brewing in his administration.) If we need a political poster child so badly, can't we find one with better ethics?

Exactly "What keyne said."

I'll give him kudos for a graceful and appropriate apology and resignation.
I'll give him kudos for his part in being a (perhaps not so remarkably) glbt friendly governor.

And, heck, I'll even give him kudos for spinning a scandal into an identity politics issue. Very neatly deflected. (Oh wait, those aren't quite kudos.)

But I'll be darned if I'll give him kudos for allowing the situation to happen in the first place.

I have a hard time supporting this idjit as well. Lets tick off the reasons. He resigned because it would look bad for a republican, in office, to be gay, and have hidden it. He ACTIVELY fought AGAINST gay marriage. He's leaving for political reasons, pure and simple - to avoid the thought of a Republican in office.

A Democrat, you mean? McGreevey is a Dem. :-)

WHAT? He's a Democrat that has signed into law 2 of the most important pro-gay laws in the last 10 years!

Oh please.

You know? I couldn't care less about who the man sleeps with, so that's not the issue. The simple fact of the matter is that he abused the powers of his office to appoint his lover to a job that his lover wasn't qualified for. And yes, that's been done hundreds of thousand of times - we all know someone who's slept with the boss to get ahead.

The matter that bothers me the most? He cheated on his wife. Regardless of your idealogical background, we all can agree that one of the very few things that is worse than cheating on someone is being the one cheated on.

Gay, bi, straignt? It doesn't matter. He broke laws, ignored standards of ethical conduct, and when forced to come clean about it, did so gracefully.

I have no problem with the "cheating" as long as she was in the loop and/or just didn't care. I do have problems with the more standard-issue crummy politician behavior, though.

I disagree. His cheating, consensual or not, is between him and his wife. It's the abuse of powers of office and then spinning it so it sounds like part of his declaration of identity that bugs me.

I'm in the "cheating is between him and his wife and I don't care about his sexual orientation but appointing his lover to that job sounds like it was unethical and innapropriate" camp.
I'm sort of wondering just _how_ unqualified his lover was? Unfortunately, all I got from the news was that the man had a public relations background, was unable to get an FBI security clearance, and essentially tried to blackmail the governor, bringing about the present public announcement. That bit about the clearance is interesting; think the lover has a criminal background? Or a drug/alcohol problem?

The lover's a foreign national (Israeli citizen). MSNBC says "as a non-citizen, he was ineligible for security clearances, and the Secret Service and FBI would not provide intelligence to him."

Doh!! Good grief. If that's the case, McGreevey is guilty of extreme stupidity, as well as having poor taste in men. I mean, I've picked some bad ones, but none with a tendency to blackmail!

The whole "appointing an unqualified person rumored to be his lover" was news 2-3 years ago. Why is it a big deal now?

Date: 2004-08-13 01:28 pm (UTC)

Because it's no longer speculation, hearsay or rumor. Now, it's fact.

Gossip by the water cooler is one thing, but admission of guilt? Woo-HOO! SCANDAL!

Well, for many of us it'd be because we don't pay attention to New Jersey.
