The comment about depending more on things like Microsoft, Cisco, IBM certification is a little depressing. We've all met certified people (mainly MCSEs 'cos there's so many of them!) who don't have a clue on how to analyse problems (and 'cos Microsoft training is actually pretty poor; they teach you rote how to do certain things and to pass their test; not how to analyse - at least the course I was on!).

I interviewed 2 people last week (and rejected the third CV as inappropriate) and I went more by the experience they listed and their answers to my questions, rather than by what certifications they had.
