Tom,
I was talking to [mutual-friend-from-college] last night on the phone and she mentioned that your book is constantly coming up in conversation in her social circle, and everybody loves it. ("Everybody" being, I assume, [her husband]'s associates at Cisco and other Silicon Valley types). She in fact gets celebrity points just for having known you in college. Anyway, I knew about your book but I didn't know you were famous! Congratulations! That's pretty cool.

The book is popular. My copy has been stolen and passed around amongst the lab admins (although gulfie started that, so it might not be a totally fair example).

When you added me to your friends list, I did some digging on your website. I had a double take moment when I noticed the Oreilly perl book listed, which was an arms length away. Sure enough there's your name right next to Larry Wall. I [ab]use it often.
