California Fast Food
Jun. 19th, 2002 11:20 pmThere are 2 fast food franchises that exist in California that don't exist in New Jersey: Quizno's and Jack In The Box. When I visit California I always try to find one or the other and eat there. Yummy-super-delicious.
While you locals may think the food at these places is junk, if you only eat there once a year they are truly a treat. Mmmmm...... Sourdough Jack.... Bacon Bacon Bacon Bacon Burger. Ymmm-deli-ish-ous!
Eating at one of these places while I'm out there is more difficult than it sounds. When I travel I'm usually with a client and eat at nice places, or with friends from a conference that are food snobs on expenses accounts that only want to eat at fancy places, or are with someone that doesn't want to go to these places, or I just plain can't find one. Or worse yet, I'm only cut loose so late at night that they are closed.
My last 2 trips I couldn't be worse. I wasn't able to sneak away from my friends at all and I was late leaving the hotel so I couldn't stop on the way to the airport.
This time would be different. I was travelling alone. No plans to meet anyone. No customers that want to go out to eat except lunch in the corporate cafeteria. Yes, this time I was going to find my California fast-food and dine like a king.
After my work was complete I decided to drive around until I found one or the other. I drove and drove. Nothing. Past the outlet mall, nothing. The shopping center had a McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, and a few others but no Jack, no Quiz.
Finally I decided to turn around at the next intersection. If I went any further I may not be able to find my way home. I had forgot to leave a trail of bread crums and...
And there it was! At the intersection was a Jack In The Box. As I got closer I saw that the strip mall ALSO had a Quiznos! Heaven!!
Tonight I ate dinner.
Twice.

fast food nirvana
Date: 2002-06-20 06:02 am (UTC)You are so missing out on the Ultimate California Fast Food Experience.
I speak of nothing less than In-n-Out Burger. Really really really great burgers, great shakes, and good fries. I don't know what they put in the burgers, but it has become a priority to consume at least one everytime I go out to California. It's much like what happened when Krispy Kreme came to Manhattan.
In addition, if you like Root Beer, seek out Henry Weinhard's Root Beer. It's available in any supermarket around there, as well as most corner delis. Tastier than anything I could find on the East Coast.
