Where do you stand on gay marriage?

'Asking about gay marriages is like asking about black marriages. It's a human-rights issue. Gays and lesbians are human beings. You can't support civil unions but not marriages -- that's like saying you can shack up but not get married. Either you're for human rights or you're not. You can't say, "You have human rights up to here, but this part is not for you." [Former New York archbishop] Cardinal O'Connor once asked me how I could support a woman's right to choose abortion. I told him, "God didn't say you have to go to heaven -- he gave you the option of hell. I think you may go to hell, and I defend your right to get there."'

I'm starting to like his style.

I go through several weeks or even months at a time of really liking his style, and then he does or says something totally ridiculous, offensive, over the line, and I think I've had enough of him. And then he comes back with the good stuff for a while and I cheer him again. *sigh*

I wish more Christian types would just let me have "the option of hell" like Sharpton, and leave that as enough. Great quote!

I generaly like his rhetoric. It's what he does with it that I don't care for -- I still remember how he used Tawana Brawley to try to further his own agenda, and I still haven't forgiven him for it.

Wow, that's a terrific interview, with some very quotable quotes. :-) And I never thought I could stand the man before....

He's certainly not my favorite person, and I still go through squicks when I find myself agreeing with him, but dayum, when he is right his rhetoric is stunningly on the mark.

What she said. I was shocked when I heard he'd said this, because it didn't fit my image of him at all and because I agreed with him--I just never expected to agree with him on much of anything beyond the weather.
