I agree. The debate was fairly even, but Obama did exactly what he had to do: prove to America that he was knowledgable, likable, calm and willing to defend himself.

I was forced to admit McCain didn't do as badly as I wanted him to. He's better than Bush in that regard. But Obama did better than I expected. And fundamentally, it was a pretty good debate as far as debates go.

I didn't pay very close attention to the debate, and they kind of said the things I expected them to say. One thing that would've put me off of McCain if I wasn't already totally unsympathetic to him was his making assertions about Obama personally that were either just bitchy ("I'm afraid Senator Obama doesn't know the difference between a strategy and a tactic"), or distortions of the truth that Obama was able to straighten out in less than a minute. It'd be one thing if they were both playing at that level, but they weren't.

I only watched a little (because YouTube is a pain), but in the part I saw McCain seemed to phrase things in a way that didn't make a lot of sense, whereas Obama came across as clear, thoughtful and incredibly competent.
