Many Republicans seek the votes of libertarians on the basis of being “the party of small government”. I constantly upset my libertarian friends by telling them that they are getting hoodwinked. We’re living though an example right now...

Right now the FISA bill should have every Libertarian and libertarian steamed. Warrentless wiretaps? OMG! That’s as anti-libertarian as you can get, right?

But where are the libertarians on this? Cato, on their front page today, don’t have a single mention of FISA or telecom amnesty. Perhaps Reason magazine is picking up the slack? Again, not a word on FISA or what is about to happen. The official Libertarian party blog? The last update is from January 18th.

I don’t mean to piss you off by bringing this up. Instead, I think this is an opportunity for coalition building.

The Republican Party has forsaken you. They used you to get elected but now that they are in power they are voting against your best interest. I beg you to see how the Democratic candidates are the only people that think this issue is important. If you can understand that, can you understand that we have other issues in common: it is a Democrat that has introduced a decriminalize pot law (Kennedy), streamlining government programs, etc. Heck, nearly every Dem challenger is speaking out against FISA, and nearly every Rep challenger is speaking in favor of FISA. Isn’t that enough of a clue?

The irony of all ironies. That the party of supposedly big government is the party that fights for individual freedoms. I mean it seems ever since Bush became president the government has expanded. But thats just how I see, but what do I know? I am just a Liberal Democrat.

The Libertarian Party has put up Bob Barr as their Presidential candidate. 'Nuff said. *makes a face* I've been known to vote Libertarian in the past, but I'm not voting for Barr.

Ron Paul--basically a libertarian in Republican clothing--has raised objections to the Iraq war and to all the domestic-spying stuff that's gone on over the last few years. Unfortunately I find his stances on immigration issues and abortion rights problematic.

Yes, and all other Republicans laugh at Ron Paul and call him unpatriotic.

Pity, that. The Republican Party could use its own Loyal Opposition. :-(

The dems are very nearly as bad. Individual freedom and privacy are inconvenient for government. Especially when there's plenty of pork and pac money to be had for both sides of the aisle. Ted Kennedy saddled us with TSA workers forever and introduced the Digital Telephony bill.

Invalid comparison.

This is 10,000 times worse and the ONLY people that stood against it were Dems.

"Where are the libertarians?"

Glad to hear it!

Now if only Cato would go along.
