Sharper Image, Lillian Vernon file for bankruptcy

Thank fucking god. Sharper Image makes overpriced, high-end, CRAP that nobody really needs. They are the leader in selling products that people buy, use a few times, then toss. The environmental impact of Sharper Image on both the resources their products consume, and the landfill space required for their shit, should be the subject of a “60 Minutes” investigation.

I like how they're blaming part of their problems on the "bad publicity" around their Ionic Breeze air purifiers, as if that was the only problem with the snake oil machines.

I remember thinking, last time I flew, how pointless The Sharper Image now was with the proliferation of the Internet--where you can buy all their crap for a lot less money, and the ability to compare things makes you realize what they're selling really isn't all that special. 20 years ago, they were the only place you could get overpriced, tacky, electronic stuff.

Much of the same can be said of Walmart... except perhaps the overpriced, high-end part.

Sharper Image has always struck me as an upmarket, technological version of kitschy gift shops. They're where you go to buy a gift for someone you don't know well but to whom you're nonetheless obligated to give a gift for some reason.

I have an entire canned rant about that kind of gift-giving, but I'll spare you and your readers.

I agree with you in general, though I have at least two gadgets from them that I've had for five years or more, and still use regularly.

What, you don't need a golf tee with a built-in FM radio and laser pointer?

Thank You.
I thought I was the only one that hated that crap.
