Gonzo resigned on Friday. Bush didn’t tell anyone until Monday so it would dominate the news cycle, which starts on Monday.

FALSE:
Gonzo will be replaced by a spidermonkey that has been trained to repeat anything that George Bush says; his resume lists poo-flinging as a hobby.

FALSE:
Gonzo hadn’t been in the office for 2 weeks because he had been traveling around the country punching handicap children in the face.

TRUE:
Gonzo took a 2-week vacation to “think” and at the end decided it was best to resign. He did phone in the resignation.

TRUE:
Nobody can figure out how it took him an entire 2 weeks to work that one out.

TRUE:
Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff is rumored to be the top candidate for replacing Gonzo. He wasn’t involved in the DoJ fire-people-that-won’t-help-stop-the-black-vote scandal, but he has his own scandals to haunt him.

FALSE:
Other rumors claim that DHS chief would be replaced by Lewis Black, the comedian that appears regularly on The Daily Show.

TRUE:
While I owned many computers prior to it, the first Windows-based PC I ever owned was bought from Gateway by my employer.

TRUE:
The Gateway was selected over the PC my employer was manufacturing at the time because it had a better sound card.

FALSE:
The CEO of Dell attacked and shot the CEO of Gateway today, killing him in cold blood. The dead body was collected by a scavenger who will use the body for dog food.

TRUE:
Over the last 5 years Dell competed effectively with Gateway and ran them out of business. Acer purchased the remains of Gateway. “Taiwan’s Acer Inc. said it had reached an agreement to acquire Gateway Inc. in a deal that values the U.S. company at about $710 million” WSJ

The only thing I haven't figured out is why they wanted this to dominate the news cycle. They're up to something.

Presumably no-one wants this story to overshadow the spin required to make Petraeus's report look good. Might as well have all the PR types working on just one problem at a time.

Damn. Because, well, that'd be an improvement.

Not according to Cenk Uygur: The Rove and Gonzales Resignations Are Tied Together
Exactly two weeks ago when Rove reisgned I predicted on our show that Gonzales would resign in a couple of weeks because they didn't want it to seem like Rove left after Gonzales -- because then it would seem like it was all tied to the US attorneys investigations (and the larger Hatch Act violations).

This resignation was designed and agreed to weeks ago. It played out exactly as I predicted here...

If Gonzales had resigned first and then Rove after him, it would have looked like they were both running away from the investigations (which is exactly what they are doing). But if Rove resigned first, then they could play it like the Rove resignation had nothing to do with the investigations and he chose to leave on his own terms.

unfortunately, IIRC, hatch act violations have only one penalty. The perp gets fired.

So Karl Rove and Monica Goodling would get fir- oh dammit.

Participating in politicaal activity oneself, when hatched, would have only that one penalty, I guess. But wouldn't enticing others to do so constitute conspiracy or the like?

Maybe, but I'm not a lawyer so I can't say. But I will say that there are bigger political fish to fry over the USAG scandal. My father in law works for the DoJ, and he's got some tales to tell about Gonzo and Ashcroft.
