Dear lazyweb science fiction fans

Can anyone point me to the old short-story that involved a time in the future where everyone would have access to computers (yeah, it was written a long time ago) and at tax time everyone could allocate where their taxes were spent by entering it at their home terminal.

I was told about this story in 1983ish, but it may have been published long before.

Anyone recognize it?
