The one thing the dems simply cannot do politicaly is leave the troops high and dry without funding. Appearing to 'not support the troops' today is political suicide. Ultimately Bush has them over a barrel, since he can simply refuse to negotiate and veto anything they give to him he doesnt like. Somehow he's free of the 'not supporting the troops' label, even tho he's done a lot of things harmful to the troops.
Aaaargh! Thats a freaking right wing talking point!
As has been pointed out, "the troops" would never get left high and dry. All this would do is simply de-fund the current conflict. Other wars have been defunded (eg. Somalia). If bush really felt that making a political point was more important than funding then it would be on his shoulders as the troops were pulled out.
I think the democrats who caved on this are in the most trouble. Not only do they not get credit for this (republicans crowing about "thier" victory), but enough of us are pissed off that we'll be looking very carefully at kicking them out and putting in someone with more backbone. I know thats one of my main criteria in the next election.
