Google Maps finds camels

The neat thing here is that the URL includes z=23. Normally z (zoom) goes from 0 to 19 when you use the GUI. This URL goes up to 11 23!

A lot of the people are looking up, suggesting that the picture was taken from a plane flying overhead and not a satellite. Cool picture, though.

I agree. While milsats can probably get to this resolution, commercial satellites cannot.

Most of the hi-res photos are from airplanes.

Most?! Not all? You mean some high res are from military sources! Wow, google really DOES have influence. ;)

You said most of the photos are from airplanes, implying that some of the photos are not.

Nevermind, I'm tired, the damn cat was scratching at the bedroom door all night long and I'm babbling.

I doubt that photos like this are from airplanes.

Unfortunately they seem to be in some sort of floating desert. I hope none of the animals wander over the edge.

Any idea what the story is behind the image, or how it was found?

I can't remember the details, but there's a guy who did a bunch of aerial photo surveys of that part of Africa and donated some of the images to Google Maps. He was written up in National Geographic not long ago.
