The only man that Karl Rove fears

I heard the phrase "Edwards is the only Democratic candidate that Karl Rove fears."

Is that true? Can anyone point me to articles or references?

I've had people tell me that Edwards is the only candidate who can win, and the only justification they could give me is that he's from the South...although it probably also helps that he seems to have all lawyers everywhere on his side. Is there something else going on there? He seems like just a moderate, very North Carolina-focused young senator with a low-key campaign.

I think that has a lot to do with it.

On the other hand, Rove is a schemer. He could certainly is the type of person that would target Edwards just to throw everyone else off his trail.

A book about Rove says that when he was on his high-school debate team, he'd show up to each debate with successively largeer boxes of index cards. In reality, most of them were blank. However his opponent didn't know that and it would intimidate the sucker to death.

I've only heard the "only Edwards can win" think once or twice, and I've also heard similar about several others - including Lieberman, who I think has hardly any chance at all. I'm not convinced there's any Democrat who is the only one who can win. I am, however, convinced that Howard Dean has by far the best chance of beating Bush, because his campaign is the only one that is really transcendent and transformative. The other candidates are all playing on the field that has been set for them, Dean is making a new electoral playing field.
