How much would you pay to have Kirk McKusick read the source-code to the FreeBSD operating system, line by line, and explain what it is and how it works.

While I was in California, I attended his weekly class until I had to return home. (he let me pay half price since I was only at the first half of the series).

Would you pay... $1,000?

These people did: Class pictures

I wasn’t there that day. Dang!

Update: Clarification: The class was 1 night per week for 15 weeks. 15 FREAKIN' WEEKS! Here is the description. You can buy the DVD set. I highly recommend it.

Was it awesome, or was it boring?
I tend to glaze over when trying to understand more than a dozen or so complex structs at one time.
But I could totally see how someone with a need (or passion) to comprehend the guts of an OS of interest might be quite interested and retained by such a presentation.

I, personally, couldn't justify the cost, but that's just me.

Also in the 'just me' category - the source on display did seem to be written by people who think comments are for wimps, never mind consistent indenting.

I took the UNIX Kernel Internals class a while back and it remains one of the best and most memorable classes I've taken. I'd love to do it again.

$1k is pretty cheap for that, assuming it was more than 2 days! Given that classes, usually not that intensive, run about what, $2500, for 5 days?

*hugs* I'm guessing you're back from Dublin?

No, still in Dublin.

The class was 15 freakin' sessions, 3-4 hours each session.

for more info

The hourly cost is next to nil.

How many bugs get discovered during these walk-throughs, I wonder?

I was adding comments to the code as he was talking. I think I got all the times he said, "This comment is wrong" or "This should be improved" and a bunch of others. I'm going to submit them to the FreeBSD team for inclusion. It would be funny if I'm the only person to submit hundreds of lines of code and all of them being comments.
