6 houses in one day
May. 14th, 2006 12:16 pmYesterday we saw 6 houses (two we didn't even enter).
One we didn't enter because it took us forever to get there, and it was in the city, not the suburbs. Lesson learned: check a map before we even think of visiting.
One we saw that was one block from Bloomfield Ave in Montclair. Walking distance to the theater, an art movie theater, restaurants, etc. Very nice.
Ever seen "Pimp My Ride"? The show were they add all the gaudy crap to a car which makes people with no taste think "this is what rich people must do". Well, we saw the house equivalent. A jacuzzi in every bathroom, fake plastic statues everywhere, and italian tile on the outside stairs, walk and even the garage floor. (I loved it, C didn't.)

Date: 2006-05-14 04:40 pm (UTC)Suburban, not city.
Near Nutley, but not in Nutley.
Multi-family (i.e. has at least some income)
Near a train station (walking distance preferred).
Central A/C (not a top priority)
GLBT-neighborhood if possible.

Date: 2006-05-14 06:06 pm (UTC)I lived in Nutley from the age of 5 to 9, and Montclair from the age of 9 to 16. My folks are still in Montclair, and it was a real heart-wrench to sell my grandparents' house in Nutley. It's odd to hear about my old stomping grounds on LJ!
When I was there, Montclair was a great town for those who genuinely appreciate socioeconomic diversity. It has changed since then -- for one thing, it has gotten a lot more gay/bi-friendly -- but I think it is still an unusual town.

Date: 2006-05-14 07:39 pm (UTC)Where I grew up is near nutley, kinda, about 30 min away...good ol' Bergen County, don't know how affordable Bergen is, or how diverse it is, as it was pretty white when I was there (but the school system is great!).
BTW, congrats on the big step forward! Buying a house together....big stuff. Whee!
