Woke up at 6am.

Missed the first train (first I wanted to try for) at 7:40 because I was trying to buy tickets at the kiosk and had to cancel and start over. Luckily I had planned on a train that wasn't the last one that would still let me get there on time.

I got there at 9:05 and took the "newhires tour" until they started doing paperwork and stuff that I didn't need to do.

Found my desk. Ran into SREs that are visiting from other places and chatted.

Ate lunch. They bring in sandwiches every day.

Attended video conference.

Worked.

Tried to meet a bunch of locals that I would need to get to know to get my new job done.

Worked.

Met with my designated mentor. Since I am not really a newhire (just new to this building) there wasn't much to talk about. But he did draw me an org chart.

Video conference call late into the night. (didn't start until 6:30pm).

Went home at 9:30pm. Shit. It's raining. I took a $5 cab to Penn Station. It took forever to find a cab so I was soaked.

The next train was leaving soon, but had a 40 minute stop-over at Newark where I had to change trains.

Got home around 10:40 or so.

Going to sleep now. It's 11:15ish.

Update: The important point here is that I'm sick and blowing my nose every 3 minutes through all of this. So much so that I had a nose-bleed. I shouldn't have pushed myself. I'm going to end up taking a sick day Tuesday.

Wow, that's quite a day. Do they bring in dinner for late meetings. too? Hopefully, this will not represent your typical week. I usually work a 50-60 hour week, but only spend about 40 hours actually in the lab/office. The rest is working from home.

I was wondering how the Google NYC office handled the free food thing.

NY takeout seems the appropriate method.

No, they have an entire cafeteria in the office that's free. I'm guessing he didn't go because he was in a meeting at the time. . . or something. Unless Google NYC is in 2 different buildings, cause the one I visited had that (I have a friend who works in marketing).

The cafeteria in NY is catered, and my first day was just sandwiches. I hope it gets better.

(When the building moves in July/Aug they'll have a real (non-catered) cafe.)

I'm reading this time managment book, I figured you might find it helpful.

It outlines a 7 step method for scheduling your day.

'Step 6 : Leave the Office'

Very wise author.
