Dates to remember
Mar. 9th, 2006 12:10 pmPLEASE POST A COMMENT if there are anniversaries, birthdays, etc. that you think I should know. I can't promise you'll get an email/whatever on those days. Feel free to list Day or Day & Year.
-----------
For years I've been using "remind" to tell me what special dates are coming in the next week.
It runs on Linux/Unix, and has a GUI, but I just edit the text file that lists all the dates. It can generate pretty calendars in HTML, PostScript and ASCII.
However, the cool thing is that the dates can be formulas! So you can have it tell you that a date is someone's 37th birthday:
REM 2 December +8 MSG %"Tom Limoncelli's [since(1968)] Birthday%" is b.
Or you can calculate that Mother's day is the second Sunday of May:
REM Sun May [Week_2] TAG holiday MSG %"Mother's Day%"
Or get a reminder that today is Friday the 13th:
REM 13 SATISFY [wkdaynum(trigdate()) == 5] MSG Watch out for black cats!
Or you can calculate that Election day is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November every 4 years:
REM Tue Nov 2 TAG holiday SCANFROM [_back(7)] SATISFY [(YEAR(TRIGDATE()) % 4) == 0] MSG %"Presidential Election%" Day
The formulas can include phase-of-moon stuff, Jewish dates stuff, and other cool things. Thus people have written long lists of formulas to calculate just about any holiday you can imagine.
Whenever I hear of a birthday or anniversary I try to record it in my configuration file. Even famous people or events:
REM 2 Jan +8 MSG %"Cuba Gooding, Jr. is [since(1968)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 17 Jan +8 MSG %"Jim Cary is [since(1962)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 12 February +8 MSG %"Christina Ricci's [since(1980)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 21 March +8 MSG %"Matthew Broderick's [since(1962)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 17 April +8 MSG %"Sarah Michelle Geller's [since(1977)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 9 July +8 MSG %"Tom Hanks' [since(1956)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 13 July +8 MSG %"Harrison Ford's [since(1970)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 18 Aug +8 MSG %"Ben Affleck's [since(1972)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 31 August +8 MSG %"Richard Gere's [since(1949)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 8 Oct +8 MSG %"Matthew Damon's [since(1970)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 12 December +8 MSG Frank Sinatra's Birthday
REM 15 December +8 MSG %"Tim Conway's [since(1933)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 21 December +8 MSG %"Samuel L. Jackson's [since(1948)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 15 March +8 MSG %"Chelsea Charms' [since(1976)] Birthday%" is b.
REM 20 June +8 MSG %"Garfield (Comic strip)' [since(1978)] Birthday%" is b.
(Article about it. Remind Homepage is here. I run the Remind-Fans Mailing list because I'm such a fan.)
