And finally I would say that... you know we are a little bit "out of touch" in Hollywood every once in a while. It's probably a good thing. We're the ones that talked about AIDS when it was just being whipstered, we talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular, and we bring up subjects... this acadamy, this group of people, gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the back theaters. I'm proud to be a part of this academy, proud to be part of this community, and proud to be "out of touch". Thank you so much for this!

sure, mammie won in 39
then, Sidney Poitier won in 63
and, it was how long until a black person of any gender won again? 2002 (if i'm not mistaken)
out of touch? i'd say
(from the article)
Only six blacks have won acting Oscars since the awards began in 1929, or 2.2 percent of the winners. The only previous year that produced three black nominees for best actor or actress was 1972: Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield for "Sounder" and Diana Ross for "Lady Sings the Blues."
"When it happened in 1972, I bet you someone probably said this is a prelude of better things to come, and we found it hasn't happened again for almost 30 years," said Frank Smith Jr., acting board president of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.
