Since my training at Google will be in California, they’ve set me up with a temporary apartment. According to Google Maps, the distance from my current house is “,941 mi (about 2 days 1 hour)”. For really long trips like that I’m surprised Google Maps doesn’t just list a bunch of airlines (ha ha, only kidding).

(No, I won’t be driving.)

is anything like the Residence Inn we stayed at this summer, they do things like happy hours and cookouts so the people on temporary assignment far from home could at least meet one another. We didn't go because we were visiting family, but it seemed like it might have a sort of meat market/random hookup aspect to it.

I've stayed at both.

The Residence Inn is a long stay hotel, the Execustay places are just normal (usually) two bedroom apartments run by a management company. No happy hours or cookouts. Cable netlink, though, but usually having to share.

The advantage of the Park Place execustay is that it's walking distance from the restaurants and bars on Castro Street in Mountain View. A lot of work people drink along there on Thursday nights (Tom, ask anyone at work they should be able to tell you where).

Mmmm, downtown Mountain View, just off Castro Street. I recommend:

Clarke's Charcoal Broiler, on El Camino Real

Amici's Pizza (chain) on Castro.

Kapp's Pizza on Castro

Lucy's Tea House on an alley off Castro

Fu Lam Mum Chinese Seafood restaurant on Castro

Gelato Classico ice cream on Castro

Ristorante Don Giovanni on Castro

There are many fine eating establishments along that street. Further afield:

Sundance Mining Company on El Camino Real in Palo Alto (steaks)

Fuki Sushi on El Camino Real in Palo Alto

Pizz'a Chicago on El Camino Real in Palo Alto

The Madarin Gourmet on Ramona in Palo Alto

The Jing-Jing on High Street in Palo Alto

Alas, Lucy's Tea House closed down. :( I don't know if they moved elsewhere or just closed.

There's also Zucca, Hangen Chinese, some good thai, Sushi Tomi, and others. Also, Momoya Sushi at the Safeway Shopping Center on Shoreline on the other side of Central Expressway toward 101. And the list of restaurants really continues. Lots of good food to eat, locally. And much of it within walking distance from where you are. Our offices are also close by, on the other side of "downtown." 4 blocks one way, and 3 blocks another. Or so.

Over in Sunnyvale, near Lawrence Expressway, is Armenian Gourmet, on Duane. Open for lunch on M-F and dinner only W-F. Excellent kebabs. I think lunch is 11am to 1:30pm. I usually try to get there before noon or around 1pm, since it's a small place and well liked.

I think Lucy still runs Chef Wang's on El Camino and Distel.

And yeah, seconded on the gelato.

There's a really good used bookstore on Castro, too...

Hey, January 16th is my birthday! Too bad the revelry will probably be the weekend before, though. :(

You're real near Franki, Johnny, and Luigi too, a very nice Italian place. I'd be happy to come down some time and have dinner there.

Tom: I'll pretty surely be in the Bay Area from about Jan. 13-25, with a few of those days spent working in SGI's (new) Mountain View offices (as opposed to SGI's old Mountain View offices, where you presumably will be). I hope to contact you as the time nears regarding some sort of evening activity, if you think that would work out.

LISA by the bay.

You will definitely have to celebrate my birthday with me, then.

In addition to the fact that you will be in town for my birthday (and cyan_blue's), you absolutely must hold March 4th for the special party we hold quarterly. Got it. You will love it. Can't wait to see you!

Yes, Tom, definitely save that date - they throw good party.

Oh, and also save Fri Feb 10 eve for my b'day gaming gathering.

And Tom, is it ok if I add you to my household's community, [livejournal.com profile] thechoirloft, so that you can know of our gatherings? We have parties on 2nd and 4th Fridays, plus some extras. Hot tubs, potluck, geeky poly coziness, good folks.

Go here to pick up the community invitation:

That lets you become a community member, not just watcher. Not sure what the difference is, but... :-)

I seem to keep saying this a lot these days, but... "Wow, you know Tom too? Cool!" ([livejournal.com profile] purplerabbit and I were amused to find that we both knew him when he posted about his last trip in).

Hey back! Yes, things are good. Took a LOT of work to get there, but well worth it.

We will most likely run into each other at the Rabbits - I am dating one of them, but could also arrange to meet up some other time. I would love to hear about how you are doing. Shall I send you contact info by email? Oh, if ya friend me, then you can read the rants and info and musings that I post. Most of the public stuff is more lightweight, if not without its own merit.

I'll be in Palo Alto Jan 16 - Jan 28, possibly longer, for a feel-good session "training" at my new employer. If you want to meet up for dinner or something, drop me a line.

Wow, I didn't realize this post was so far back.
I noticed this today:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Pittsburgh+San+Francisco

(I wasn't actually searching for those cities, but someone's name that happened to be the same as two other cities.)

Damn! Neat little tricks like that just keep popping up, don't they?

And I was excited when I found out that searching for a UPS tracking number gave you a link to track the package!

From: [identity profile] uberjames.livejournal.com
Yeah, I've seen those too. I kind of wish I could input the list of packages I'm waiting for and had one place I could check all of their statuses without needing to reenter them.
