Will Google be the downfall of Microsoft?

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/23/1536238

Can anyone get me a copy of this memo? I’m sure it is out there somewhere but I can’t find it.

Anyone?

Anyone?

No, but it was my experience that these memos would go around, and the executives would read them and then the worker bees, the people who actually get shit done, would just go about getting whatever they needed to done.

BTW, Bill Gates himself has said that one day Microsoft will go out of business. He thinks every business has its ultimate end.

You might (or might not) find Scoble's take on this interesting: http://radio.weblogs.com/0001011/2005/09/23.html#a11226.

Looking around... I assume you've found this? It doesn't include the text of the memo but lots of interesting stuff about Microsoft development cycles and their dysfunctional culture: http://www.furl.net/members/sknecht/

Yeah, in a very small nutshell, Longhorn is why I left. The article is spot on.

I think Google isn't going to take on MSFT. At least, not yet. I think they've smelled blood in the water from a much weaker target - AOL. I think Google will own AOL inside of two years. This is important mostly because of the cash issue. If Google wants to take on MSFT, and I have no doubt they do, they will need a lot more cash to do it. Having an AOL-style customer stream and the associated recurring low-overhead revenue would put Google in position to do battle with Redmond's bankroll. AOL are in terrible shape and heading downhill. Their debt burden is huge and the T-W fiasco has left them sour. They're takeover material now, but the price is probably too high. If Google Wireless really does come true then the balance sheet starts looking better and better. For the moment, just for fun, tick off the things you get from AOL that Google _doesn't_ also offer. The list is very slim.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the rumors that AOL is in talks to be acquired by MSFT...
