Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) was harshly upbraided Monday night by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and other members of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee for failing to be a “team player,” signaling that the Democratic leadership intention to impose a strict regimen of party discipline in the 109th Congress.

It’s about time. We don’t need anyone to benefit from not being a team player. Now that Zell is gone, we have to get rid of all the other DINOs (Democrats In Name Only). Read the whole article for more info

I had taken it as a hopeful sign, but it seems that the leadership isn't so pissed off at Peterson that they, you know, passed over him for his committee chairs or anything. Strong language won't be enough to crack the whip, and the Democratic leadership needs to figure that out fast.

So what the Democrats are saying is that a member of the house should show loyalty to his party regardless of what the people that voted for him may want??

I'm not saying one side is right or wrong, that's just how it's sounding.

The alternative is to reward people for voting against the party?

There is a middle ground between rewarding and upbraiding. The Republican word for it is "tolerance".

If a guy is consistantly against the party, then that is a pretty unusual thing, and the party should withdraw their endorsement and support of that candidate.

Where does the greater loyalty lie? With the voters or the party?
