When your CD playing software downloads the track names from some internet database, the year of each track should be entirely accurate. I just bought a 2-disk set of the original raps (including the first rap ever recorded: Rapper’s Delight!) and some of the songs are listed as being the wrong year (at least according to the copyright on the CD jacket).

And the songs aren’t even in chronological order!

There should be a LAW!!!!

(Luckily with iTunes I can edit the years, and even change the track numbers and disc number so that I can pretend the disc was produced like it should be.)

You know, I was just driving through Indiana and right near the Ohio border is "Tom Raper's RV" so there are plenty of giant billboards reading "you're in Raper Country!"

1) The track listings for the CD information database that iTunes uses, GraceNote I believe, are user-input.

2) If you have alterations to the track listings, you can submit changes under the Advanced menu.

I don't know what GraceNote actually does with change submissions, but it's worth a try.

I submitted corrections before I even posted to my LJ. I just wish I hadn't had to correct the dates.

Metadata

Metadata (track names, artist name, dates, etc.) is entered by trained monkeys. You are lucky you get dates at all. I can elaborate further, if you'd like. You can also edit this data in Windows Media Player Advanced Tag Editor and/or a bunch of other shareware available on the net. In Windows Media Player, you can also create playlists to play in chronological order so you don't have to go through the rigamarole of renumbering the tracks. This is all on Windows, however - no idea how you do it on a Mac.

Dates in particular are difficult, because different record companies are inconsistent in how they date - original recording? date of this recording? date of remastering? Basically, it's whatever you decide it is.

Yeah, I edited everything in iTunes just fine. I just wish the data was right in the first place, and that compilation producers would put songs in order by year.
