Fundamentally, people vote against things that don't affect them. People vote for things that benefit their own self-interest.
That's why gay marriage is so unpopular in poll after poll. The attitude is: "I'm not gay, I don't need same-sex marriage. Don't give me the 'but what if your son or daughter was gay?' fluff. They aren't. And even if they are, I don't want to know about it."
That's why "marriage freedom" is what we should be fighting for. Everyone wants Marriage Freedom. because it protects them too.
