This entire situation has really caused a lot of stress in NJ’s GLBTI activist community. How do you support a governor when they simultaneously come out and admit to being blackmailed? The above article has some excellent quotes from the people that I work with.

Considering that we’re all volunteers, it’s amazing this many people have jobs that permit us to take a phone call from reports on a moments notice.

I disagree with the position presented in the article, that every out public figure helps the GLBT movement and every one on the DL hinders it. McGreevey's not helping us; he was being blackmailed and it forced him out. It took some guts to do it the way he did rather than risking letting this guy go forward with the harassment case and lying his ass off about their relationship, but no more than I'd expect from a governor. The article goes on to point out that familiarity weakens bigotry, but this is the kind of outing that the conservative right just loves, because it shores up negative stereotypes about gay people.
