A trendy point to make in business seminars is that the little plastic thing at the end of a shoelace actually has a name but rarely do people know what it is called. It's called an aglet. Google will tell you this. So if I hear yet another person make this point I'm going to scream.

Yeah.. and in "Re-possessed" (the spoof on The Exorcist--apparently Linda Blair's character forgot to pay her exorcism bill, so she got... you guessed it!), the husband explains all about Aglet ("You see, Billy, back in the old days, your last name reflected what you did for a living.. so someone named Baker was a baker, and so forth. We're "Aglet" which is the little plastic end of a shoelace--we made those." "Dad? What did John Hancock's family do?")

Why would anybody make this point in a business seminar?

"You know that little thing on the end of a shoelace? It's called an aglet. Now about embracing your core values..."

It's the "something we all take for granted, but someone did actually invent it" angle.

You should have raised your hand and asked, "And what's that little cleft under your nose called?"

As many times as I've been told that, it's one of those odd pieces of information I can't retain. But if you ask me when the war of 1812 was...

Or was it November?

What a ripoff

This is lifted directly from the movie Cocktail (in which they were referred to
as "flugelbinders"). Nice to know that a random assortment of movie trivia
can replace business seminar attendance.

Cool!

I find that story infuriating, because they always act as if the aiglet is made entirely separately from the shoelace, which you'd know, if you've ever seen shoelaces made (or even just thought for a minute about manufacturing processes), cannot possibly be the case. In fact, the shoelace factories have a big roll of shrinkable plastic which they stick on the end of the shoelaces.
