"My first time renting a car in the UK, I was a little surprised at how long it took to get up to 100 on the motorway and was thinking disparaging remarks about this shitbox Escort. And then I realized that in the UK they still use miles."

(For people who don't know - the UK maximum speed limit on a motorway is 70mph... Which means 80, unless there's a speed camera around. But 100 will get you banned from driving for a year or so.)

Am I completely misremembering that you folks went metric sometime around 1977? Miles are now honorary Metric System units now, or something?

I was born in 1962, and was taught at school as if we were just about to go metric. It still hasn't happened fully.

So.. things like bottled milk (pints), draught beer (pints) and distances on roads etc (miles) are still Imperial measurements, but most food is metric units.
