After not working with databases since 1991 in college (in a class where it was all theory... we never did actually have an SQL server to talk too) I am constructing my first "serious" database and I'm doing it in 2NF (and possible 3NF).

Suck that!

geek.

:)

Seriously, btw. check out dbdesigner - gui (linux and windows) for doing database layout and design.

also check out dbvisualizer. Java swing app that is a SCREAMINGLY good front end to any sql db (i use it for all my mysql work)

Do you mean http://www.fabforce.net/dbdesigner4? I can't get it to run on FreeBSD, and I don't have any Linux boxes. Hmm... I guess it's time to boot up VirtualPC!

Thanks!

Yes...

but can you get it to BCNF, 4NF, or 5NF...and what about inter-relational normalization?

* grinning and ducking *

Don't forget DK/NF (Domain-Key Normal Form, Fagin(1981)). :)

And for your next trick, try getting transactions to works between different SQL platforms.

Or maybe that stupid, depending on how you look at it...

Enjoy!

When I set up the database schema for my on-again, off-again music database project, I knew nothing about database design and normalization, and set it up in a way that made intuitive sense based on my rudimentary knowledge of relational databases. Then I started reading about normalization, and found that my schema conformed perfectly to at least 3NF. That made for a nice little geekly egoboo. :-)
