One of the things that ruined the 2000 election for Gore was that people felt that the election didn't matter. That let people like Nader gather votes, instead of permitting the creation of a liberal wing of the democratic party.

It will be different this year:

About 63 percent of those surveyed said it really matters who wins the election, said the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. In June 2000, 45 percent said it really mattered who won the presidential election between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush.
Now we just have to hope that this works in our favor. ;-)
