6 months ago Mary Landrieu, senior United States Senator from the State of Louisiana, mocked safety standards.

My heart goes out to all the people in Louisiana that are affected by this.

I know I was only 10 years old at the time, but if we had started a massive project to develop alternatives to oil when I said we should have, the pressure to drill would be greatly reduced right now. Ah, now instead of ignoring 10 year olds, we just elect politicians that act as immature 10 year olds.

This is scary. Let's hope it's not as bad as it easily could be.

But yeah, if the progress we made on alternative energy and efficiency in the 70s had continued without interruption, we'd be in a different world by now. The analogy is pollution--we fought an enormous battle on smog and particulates, that we largely won, but without reducing energy consumption or burning of fossil fuels, perhaps just changing the mix. It now turns out that CO2 is the biggest threat to our planet, and we had been actually mitigating its impact by production of atmospheric aerosols. We needed the corresponding decrease in fossil fuel usage too, which didn't happen.
