I liked the cast, and the interaction between the characters was great. There were touches of the original (the way Kirk sat, tilted his head) but it wasn't over the top.

I haven't decided how I feel about the whole "reboot" thing. I get it that this way the movies won't have to worry about continuity with the TV shows and other movies. And there has been lots of time travel in other movies (going back to get whales, the TNG movie where they had to stop the Borg from changing Earth's history). But I like TNG and the movies enough to not want them to be wiped from the Star Trek world. I still want Data, for instance. :) I would think that the changes done to Kirk's history and the destruction of Vulcan would have some pretty big ripples.
I think that reviews like that demonstrate that the writers got everything exactly right.
That's the point of the reboot.
The universe didn't fork at the battle with the U.S.S. Kelvin. It forked much earlier. In this alternate universe, Kirk's brother was never born, yadda yadda yadda.
The problem with the old canon was that the writers had written themselves into a corner. There wasn't much left for them to do. Now they have a fresh start.
