Movie Review: Pieces of April
Nov. 22nd, 2003 11:35 pmToday I saw Pieces of April at the Enzian Theater in Maitland Florida.
I enjoyed this film. I don't know if I just really like Katie Holms (maybe I should watch that TV show she's on) or that I'm an old sap when it comes to films about Thanksgiving. Seeing it this weekend was especially emotional for me, but then again I cried through the end of Planes, Trains and Automobiles when I re-watched in in college before Thanksgiving break about 15 years ago this weekend.
The movie is about a young woman (April) who has become an outcast from her family but is cooking Thanksgiving dinner for them. The film intermixes the family's trip from the suburbs into NYC, and shots of her and her boyfriend's day as they prepare for their arrival.
This isn't a slapstick "ooops she dropped the turkey" film (though she does drop the turkey, and it's pretty funny). It's a touching story about reconnecting with family.
And anything else would give too much away.
Go see it before it leaves the theater.
(This movie is in art theaters and places that show indie films.)
