Nov. 9th, 2003 05:26 pmCNN asked the candidates to supply 30-second videos, expressly to speak to young people and their notorious short attention spans. Lieberman’s high-speed cutting and rapid rhythm track was a perfect example of what an old person would think a young person would watch, but all it conveyed was a blur. Kerry’s looked like a Bon Jovi arena concert. Sharpton’s entry—meant to show him registering voters at a church rally—looked like a bad bar mitzvah video. Kucinich’s showed an unidentified Ani Difranco warmly endorsing him. Edwards and Clark went with warm and fuzzy talking to the camera, and the general ended with an oh-so-hip reference to the band Outkast whom he’s surely never listened to. Only Dean succeeded in meshing production values and message effectively, tying together a double-timed series of clips of him with the words, “Only You Have the Power to Take Your Country Back.” It reminded me of Bill Hillsman’s brilliant ads for Ralph Nader in 2000.

Date: 2003-11-10 09:13 am (UTC)I was impressed with Dean's video. I didn't think Lieberman's was that awful, even though I don't like him as a candidate. Moseley Braun is playing the "elect me because I'm not a priveleged white man" message again...I wish she'd talk about something more than that, you know?
