They are portrayed as dumber in each generation, but it isn't a "fat = dumb" thing, it is a "dumb people beget dumber people" thing. The point being that big megacorporations want us to be dumb, fat, and happy... and we're willing to go along with it.
The other thing to keep in mind about their portrayal is that they explicitly stated that changes to the human anatomy were expected due to the micro-gravity environment they were in.
