A week from Thursday (Feb 28) is my self-declared “National Update Your Damn Profile Day”. Should I expand it to include Facebook and other profiles or just keep it LJ?
I think someone could make a bundle making a nifty web 2.0 thingy to track and integrate profile info. Then you could have one place you go to update profile info for all your social network stuff. I think it would need to allow for business and personal profiles, as well as private and public info.
Wish I had time to devote to such a project. I'm sure someone will unroll something like it soon.
OpenSocial is a google-sponsored initiative to make sure all social sites have similar APIs so that you can move your profile and data around (it is to prevent lock-in, and to make sure you can write a plug-in once and have it work on all social sites)
OpenID lets you have one username/password that works on many sites. I believe LiveJournal is involved, because there are now third-party sites that let you log in using your LJ username/password. It happens securely... the site never learns your actual password.
I tend to be of the mindset, "In for a penny, in for a pound." I say include them all. I have so many, I might just have to take the whole day off to update them all.
If I had mad programming skills, I would figure out some way to map the various fields in the 20 or 50 top dating and social networking sites and design an app that would let you update once and populate across all of the sites you tell it to.
But I don't so I can't and I'll just dream about it instead.
Oooo, I need to remember to add this to my Google Calendar!
I'd lean towards "Update All Your Damned Profiles Day" myself. But if I include all the professional and social¹ sites that I deal with something like 11 sites. Yikes. __________ ¹ Yes, including the adult-only sites.
I was re-reading The Fountains of Paradise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountains_of_Paradise) recently, and as an aside Clarke brings up how typically on one's birthday most people spent some time updating an equivalent of their profile/RSS subscriptions. Always thought that'd be a good idea, certainly my bookmarks could use a good vacuuming.....
