A quote by Alice Hoglan, who is the mother of Mark Bingham. Bingham was her gay son who died aboard United Flight # 93 on that terrible day (9/11) two years ago. He is credited in leading the fight against the terrorists on the plane, and with other courageous passengers, they were able to prevent the plane from it likely flying into the US Capitol; it instead crashed into a Pennsylvania field killing all aboard.

When asked by San Francisco Chronicle reporter Jane Ganahl about what she would say at this week’s US Senate hearing on a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, if given a chance to speak, Hoglan stated:

"I would tell them I was the mother of a gay man and that I've had a slow evolution. That I had roots in middle America and didn't understand what it meant to be gay until the person I loved most in the world told me he was. I would tell them he died under heroic circumstances defending the country from terrorist attack, and his life and death have made me realize how we all need to wake up and get educated about the gay community. That people who have the good fortune of being born gay, or lesbian, or bisexual or transgender should certainly be allowed to marry, and acknowledge their life partner. It's an idea whose time has come; in fact it's long overdue. We need to educate ourselves as a nation about the contributions that gay people have made, rather than standing in their way."
